Matey going nuts on percussion in slo-mo

I Tried So Hard from Night Works on Vimeo.

Ive got a new found love of percussion born out of my current penchent for making scrappy disco tracks. My collection currently boasts some bongos, a tambourine, a cowbell, an egg shaker and a maraca. This video is by some guy from Metronemy the songs a bit whatever but the video is immense. I absolutely want to be this dude going nuts on his perc. I hear the call! (or maybe the whistle?)

Copycat - Disco Thang

Out on MB disco released march 16th. Remixes from Lou Teti & Ajello Ethos Mama. Gotta love the big J.T. vid!

A major downside to warehouse living is the lack of central heating. My only strategy to combat the infernal cold is to crank my electric blanket up full and sit on it like a hibernating tortoise. Admittedly this has meant i havent been overly keen on heading out into the frozen abyss that is London so I dont have a great deal of tales to report from fun nights out raving. I have however been spending my time on the leccy B wisely and have been digging like a dog on a beach for new tunes of which there are a great many out there tickling the ol eardrums.

Rodion & Khan - Discoteca Romana

Definitely my favorite EP so far this year. the production is slick and progressive bringing out some nice quirks in the electric boogie feel. Khan incidentally is formerly of Captain Comotose whos album 'Up In Flames' has long been a favorite of mine. Long may his fine work continue. The whole EP is well worth a listen (out now on French label La Belle) - have a squizz the the video to the title track Discoteca Romana.....

Italian label Opilec Records has released a compilation to show case its history and current rosta. There is a broad range of electronica tracks (some more experimental than others!) which give a good heads up of whats the labels about. Most definitely the choice pick of the bunch is (Track 2) Todd Terje's version of 'High Pressure' by 80's LA synth punk outfit The Units. Rory Phillips version a few years back was a monster and Terje has matched it and more with his interpretation. Mixmag's disco tune of the month is a keeper for sure.

A guilty pleasure to finish this post with. Melbourne Indie Electro act Cosmo Black have released this simply magnificent version of Phil Collins - 'In the air Tonight'. Ive opened with this every set ive played since my itunes wrapped its legs around it. I blatantly loved that chocolate advert but now I really wish they never bothered as of course that bastard gorilla pops in to my head when the drum fill comes in. Oh well. Its all tongue in cheek I guess however I wont hear a word against the original .....or the mighty P.C. niether!

Talk of the dance town is all about the bugged out weekender at the Bognor Butlins this weekend. Choice picks from the line up include Joy Orbison, Erol Alkan, Maya Jane Coles, Horse Meat Disco & Ivan Smagghe. Sorry to be missing out, no doubt the sun will be shining in the minds of all present gloomy weather or not!

This weeks must hear track is Moullinex version of Michael Sambello's 80's flash dance anthem 'Maniac' featuring Peaches. Have been playing this out at every available oppertunity. So wrong.....but so right!

Another track im loving this week is Rodion & Khan - Let's Motor from their upcoming EP, Discoteca Romana, released Feb 6 on French label La Belle Records.

Lastly this edit by Bill Brewster in memory of Etta James who passed away yesterday from leukemia at the age of 73. Ive played Etta's records out often and will be sure do so even more these coming weeks to pay my repects to the incredible husky soul singer.

'We all gotta piss buddy!'

Did it again. First Marley and me now Crazy Stupid Love. Booze + altitude = Had a bit of a cry. What's with that? Bollocks anyways, I can cry if I want, fuck it.

What's annoying me:

Matey walking up and down the plane to 'stretch'. Why the slow weird strut like your better than the rest of us sitting here in our poorly advised stretchy jean travel wear? I don't want your posturing buttocks up in my grill with your badly fitting trousers and jumper made of hemp. Piss off into business class and drink your complimentary evian you dick.

Also, toilet queue etiquette seems to have been abandoned. Don't give it the old man, hunch back, walking round in beige socks one with me - we all gotta piss buddy! Stop avoiding my eyeballing and as Harry Balafonte once said, jump in the line motherfucker.

Nice guy next to me though. Returning home to Sri Lanka for the first time in 5 years after finishing an accountancy degree in London. His parents don't know he's coming home, it's a surprise for new year. I thought that was nice. He recommended me some places to visit. Sadly I could hardly understand a flipping word.

Im joining my dear friend Ed King in Sri Lanka. Despite missing out on the height of Acid House rave culture, thanks to Ed i was able to chomp hard on a couple of rave fruits that he shook from the tree into the Birmingham Dance Factory during the early 90's. The 3 original frequency nights Ed put on there remain to this day some of the most edgy & exciting club nights ive been to. Cheers Ed for giving me that sniff of the barmaid's apron. Great times and happy (hardcore) memories.

As a doth of my cap to those times ive posted this modern spin on Acid House by DJ Harry Bennett.
